A bond-animal is an animal that has a mental bond to an elf, through a magic simply called "Animal-Bonding".
The bond-friends often share blood; meaning that the animals have some weak elf-blood running through their veins and the elves have some animal-blood.
It has happened that weakly elf-blooded animals have formed bonds with pureblooded elves, or even that they've formed bonds with an elf with animal-blood of another race (for example: a wolf bonding with a cat-blooded elf).
